Below is a poem inspired by the painting above, written by poet Katherine V. Dresdner.

Deep in Woods

We are deep in woods
climbing a mountain weaving through
the light mist floating above the cold stream

shirts soaked with sweat we stop for water
knapsacks off we fish out and eat the last
bits of sticky sweet apple, raisins and rye bread

three miles back we scrambled up massive boulders lichen spotted
islands rising up in air saturated with the greenish light mosses
running princess pine and arcs of fern

where air where skin
water in water out
erasing making boundaries

when you stop climbing
can you ear blood pump
I heard a beetle’s dry rustle

Our boots slide on glistening roots
That wind around glacial rock
To the earth seeking water

Sharp jack pine
Five needle white pine
Primeval saprophytic spawn under soft leaf mold

You know we will be earth and water
Is that all there will be water in light
The wind on rock

There is this I remember
How we gathered white silky peels of birch
At twilight and made drawings to send home
